Take Action

​In order to be effective against strong anti-sportsmen forces that are shaping our laws and regulations, every sportsman in Connecticut must step out of their comfort zone, speak up and be heard. Sportsmen have a long tradition of enjoying peace and nature and are not particularly inclined to get involved in public life. Unfortunately, sportsmen can no longer be silent and expect the next generation will have the quality of life we enjoy today.

Opponents of sportsmen’s rights are well-funded, self-described “activists,” and usually poorly informed. Yet, they win by being persistent, vocal and taking action. Sportsmen and recreational shooters in Connecticut must take a page from their playbook by speaking out, being heard and most importantly, taking action.

​Take the time to find your State Representative and State Senator

A good relationship is respectful and doesn’t necessarily mean that you always agree. But it is always worth the time to work on developing a relationship with your elected officials on the state and local level.

Take note of what legislative committees your legislators serve on. Most (but not all) sportsmen’s issues go through the Environment Committee or the Judiciary Committee (firearms). You can check to see if your legislators sit on either of those committees by visiting each committee’s website.

Sign up for your legislators newsletter updates and follow on social media. All legislators communicate with a newsletter update that is sent out to people who sign up. You should get those newsletter email lists and follow your legislators on social media. This will help you stay on top of their work, priorities and voting record.

Make time to go to your legislator’s in-district office hours. You can introduce yourself and let them know sportsmen’s issues are important to you and will affect your vote.

Send an email to your legislators. Introduce yourself with your address and let them know you are a sportsman in their district and that you are a supporter of Friends of Connecticut Sportsmen.
